Market Traders waiting for business to begin.
The Central Wholesale Market, Dambulla.
I n Sri Lanka, most people buy garden produce from a Pola (public market). The Central Wholesale fruit and vegetable market for the country is at Dambulla, near the base of the rock with the famous Ancient Buddhist painted cave temples.
The early-morning atmosphere in the wholesale market is bustling, yet faces are strained and conversation is stilted until the first customers arrive and trading starts. Then the phones and smiles come out as the bargaining and banter begin.
