Despite its name, this is a rare, migratory butterfly with a mixed style of flight, switching between intermittent flapping and gliding.
Found in the low country and up to elevations of about 1500 m in Sri Lanka.
This is an introduced species to Sri Lanka, locally called an Orange Migrant Butterfly (Catopsilia scylla).
It became established on the island through the introduction of an ornamental plant Senna surattensis, and now also feeds on Senna spectabilis and Senna tora.
It is found in the Southwest wet zone and the “Up Country” of Sri Lanka.
The distribution of wildlife and plantlife in Sri Lanka depends directly on the availability of rainwater. Most of the endemic plants and animals (unique to Sri Lanka) live in the Central Highlands and the Southwestern part of the country, known as the “Wet Zone,” which receives plenty of rain (an annual average of 2500 millimeters)
